Nature as Medicine

Vasant Institute’s Healing Garden

We are honored to introduce VIOA's newly opened Healing Garden, a natural open space where ancient Ayurvedic wisdom meets the healing power of nature. This extraordinary space has been designed as a living mandala, incorporating the principles of Ayurveda, Vastu Shastra and Vedic Science to create an environment that supports healing on all levels.

Four Sacred Elements of Our Healing Garden

The Sacred Temple

In the North East quadrant of our garden stands a simple temple, serving as the spiritual center of garden. Here, guests can:

  • Offer prayers and set intentions for their healing journey
  • Experience moments of divine connection and surrender
  • Participate in morning and evening arati ceremonies
  • Sit for some time in meditation and contemplation

The Nakshatra Circle

Our unique Nakshatra Circle represents one of the most profound applications of Vedic knowledge to healing. This circular garden features:

Twenty-Seven Sacred Herbs: Each of the 27 Nakshatras (lunar asterisms) is represented by specific healing herbs planted in their arrangement:

  • Ashwini Nakshatra: Devadharu (Himalayan Cedar)
  • Bharani Nakshatra: Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
  • Krittika Nakshatra: Khadira (Acacia Catechu)
  • Rohini Nakshatra: Jamun (Black plum)
  • And all 27 nakshatras with their corresponding healing plants

Personalized Celestial Healing: Guests can spend time with the herbs corresponding to their birth nakshatra, creating a personal connection with cosmic healing energies.

The Dhatu Mounds - Integrating all 7 Tissue Layers

The Dhatu Garden features seven distinct mounds, each dedicated to one of the seven bodily tissues (dhatus) according to Ayurveda:

  • Rasa Dhatu Mound (Plasma)

Herbs that support circulation and lymphatic health

  • Rakta Dhatu Mound (Blood)

Plants that purify and strengthen the blood

  • Mamsa Dhatu Mound (Muscle)

    Strengthening herbs for muscular health

  • Meda Dhatu Mound (Fat Tissue)

    Plants that regulate metabolism

  • Asthi Dhatu Mound (Bone)

    Calcium-rich plants and bone-strengthening herbs

  • Majja Dhatu Mound (Nervous System)

    Nervine tonics and brain-supporting herbs

  • Shukra Dhatu Mound (Reproductive Tissue)

    Rejuvenative and aphrodisiac herbs

Spending time in this space will support balancing and rejuvenation of all 7 tissue systems in our body. You can walk in circle or weave in and out on the wavy shaped path that moves around the mounds.

Pond

In the far northern section of the gardens is a large pond featuring Coi fish. This ties in the water element which is critical to our well beings as we are made up of over 60% water. The water element is also the only element that is shared by 2 dosha’s Pitta and Kapha.

Integration with Your Panchakarma Experience

The Healing Garden is thoughtfully integrated into your daily routine:

  • Morning walks among the nakshatra herbs to set intentions for the day

  • Evening contemplation at the temple after your treatments

  • Dhatu-specific meditation at the mound corresponding to your primary imbalance

A Living Laboratory of Healing

This garden serves as more than a beautiful space—it is a living laboratory where guests can:

  • Learn about medicinal plants and their healing properties
  • Understand the connection between cosmic forces and earthly healing
  • Experience the integration of spirituality, nature, and medicine
  • Take inspiration for creating their own healing gardens at home

Come, walk among the healing herbs, offer prayers at the sacred temple, and allow the wisdom of nature to support your transformation. In our Healing Garden, every breath, every step, and every moment becomes an opportunity for deeper healing and spiritual awakening
